Community Education Programs

Our Community Education Classes are typically run out of Union Street Center.  Any other class sites will be indicated in the course descriptions listed below.  We would love to hear your ideas about classes that you would like to take or teach.  Give us a call at 517-663-8169!

 

We are currently accepting class proposals for our Community Education Program!  This is a great opportunity to share your skills with others.  Print and mail a copy of the Course Proposal Form to the attention of Melisa Chick at 501 Union Street or e-mail a completed form to mchick@erpsk12.org.

ZUMBA and strength training combo (AGES 13 & UP)
The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away! The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. This class is for all ages and fitness levels. An optional 20 minute strength training class follows the Zumba class. You will need to supply your own free weight. Instructor Denise Perkins.
 
Dates: Mondays and Thursdays (Year Round)
Time: 5:30pm to 6:30 pm (Zumba)
6:30pm - 6:50pm (Strength Training $2)

YOGA SUNDAYS
Once monthly yoga workshops, the first Sunday of every month, join yoga teacher Julie Kirkpatrick, an advanced certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher, in a focussed 2 hr.workshop zeroing in on a particular aspect of yoga poses (asanas) with a sprinkling of yoga philosophy (how the physical movements have a broader meaning).  Each class will have appropriate warm ups, then delve into the topic and leave you with simple take home routines to practice. These workshops are open to all levels of practitioners.  If possible please bring your own yoga mat, blocks, strap, and blanket. 
 
Dates and themes:
June 5 : Are you a hippy?! Express your hippiness and explore hip mobility and how tight hips can become more mobile.
 
July 3: Are you balanced? Explore balances that can help create ease and bring a sense of peace.
 
Aug 7: Are you ready to move forward? Explore forward bends which help to open up the back muscles and prepare us to let go of what holds us back. 
 
Sept 4: Are you ready to move forward boldly? Explore back bends and how they can help us to open the fronts of our bodies to prepare for moving forward with calm strength.
 
Oct 2: Can you twist? Learn a variety of twists and why twisting is beneficial.
 
Nov 6: Turn yourself upside down! Safely learn about inverting the body and the benefits of turning upside down.
 
Time:1-3 pm on Sundays listed above
Cost: $12 per class
 
Beginner Ukulele Class
A fun and stress free environment to learn how to play the ukulele.  In this class you will learn how to tune your ukulele, identify chords and chord groups and learn songs.  Fun for people of all ages!  *Must bring your own ukulele.
 
Dates: May 16th, 17th &19th
Time: 7:00-9:00 pm (Union St. conference room)
Cost: $40 for 3 day session
 
 
Keep Talking: An Introduction to Professional Voice Over
If you’ve ever wondered how to begin in voice over part time, full time, or for supplemental or retirement income, this workshop is a great, upbeat, and most importantly, realistic first step. Our easy-to-access remote learning system will take you behind the scenes at Voice Coaches main studios, where we regularly produce voice over content for clients including Netflix, Discovery, HGTV, Disney, Lifetime, Nickelodeon, and many more. From audio books, training material, animation, and commercials to socially relevant content, television, and much, much more: today’s voice over field has become a great way to leverage your individual voice qualities and communication skill in a whole new way.
 
This class also includes an opportunity to receive a brief one-on-one voice range and quality assessment with our instructor.

CHAMPIONS of the REALM (Grades 6 to 8)
The hunt is on!  The heros are on a quest to find the cursed sword and destroy it.  However, they must first find the mysterious cat-folk who possesses it.
*GURPS, Dungeon Fantasy games system*  Dice, pencils, figurines and character sheets will be provided.

Dates: Fridays: January 24th & 31st, February 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th.Time: 3-6 pm

INTRO TO DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS (BEGINNERS ONLY)
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is rapidly growing in popularity, and now is the time to find out why. This all-online class is for individuals or families that want to learn this “first and best” role-playing game that uses imagination, problem-solving, teamwork, strategy and many other skills. Please note, this class is for beginners only. If you have played the game before, this is not the right class for you. But if D&D sounds interesting but you have no idea how to start - start right here! If you have any questions
as to whether this class would work for you, contact the instructor.
 
Why play D&D? Because it’s really fun. It’s for all ages and backgrounds. It is an excellent activity for families to do together. It’s also a great way for individuals to connect with others in a safe environment.
 
This class will be scheduled to meet each participant’s own schedule. For individual students, it will involve one-on-one time with the teacher and very small group sessions. For families, it will be one-on-one time with just one family at a time. You won’t need anything but a computer (with microphone), internet access and your brain. Days and times will be determined by the participants’ schedules.
 
So put away that game controller and discover the endless world of Dungeons and Dragons!

CARDIO DRUMMING - RESUMING APRIL 11, 2022!

Connect with your true rhythm in life combining  drumming, music, rhythm and movement! This complete cardio workout is sure to make you sweat!  First class is free to try!

Place: Greyhound Central Elementary - Gym

Cost: (Drop-in) $2.00 to rent a kit or $20 to purchase kit (class is free if you bring your own equipment)

SANCHIN-RYU'S KARATE FOR KIDS - (Grades K-8) 

This program combines two crucial courses into one - Sanchin-Ryu Karate & Self-Defense and Project Secure Child (child safety). This class is taught by Certified Sanchin-Ryu Instructor, Sensei Philip Benedict, 4th Degree Black Belt.

 

Dates: Wednesdays (Spring Session April 6th - June 8th)

Time:  6:00 pm to 6:45 pm

Place:  Union Street Center (Gym)

Cost:  $40/student (10 week session)

 

SANCHIN-RYU'S KARATE FOR FAMILIES 

Set in a fun, non-competitive and informative atmosphere, this program is designed to empower today's adults with knowledge that can save your life! Students will learn a broad range of techniques including individual strikes, advanced combinations and more. This class is taught by Certified Sanchin-Ryu Instructor, Sensei Philip Benedict, 4th Degree Black Belt.

 

Dates:  Wednesdays (Spring Session April 6th - June 8th)

Time:  7:00 - 7:45 PM

Place:  Union Street Center (Gym)

Cost:  $80/family (10 week session)
