Community Education Programs

Our Community Education Classes are typically run out of Union Street Center.  Any other class sites will be indicated in the course descriptions listed below.  We would love to hear your ideas about classes that you would like to take or teach.  Give us a call at 517-663-8169!

 

We are currently accepting class proposals for our Community Education Program!  This is a great opportunity to share your skills with others.  Print and mail a copy of the Course Proposal Form to the attention of Melisa Chick at 501 Union Street or e-mail a completed form to [email protected]

ZUMBA and strength training combo (AGES 13 & UP)
The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away! The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. This class is for all ages and fitness levels. An optional 20 minute strength training class follows the Zumba class. You will need to supply your own free weight. Instructor Denise Perkins.
 
Dates: Mondays and Thursdays (Year Round)
Time: 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm (Zumba)
Place: Union Street Room 108
Cost: $5 drop-in fee (Zumba)
 
 
YOGA SUNDAYS (Returning February 5th)
Once monthly yoga workshops, the first Sunday of every month, join yoga teacher Julie Kirkpatrick, an advanced certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher, in a focussed 2 hr. workshop zeroing in on a particular aspect of yoga poses (asanas) with a sprinkling of yoga philosophy (how the physical movements have a broader meaning).  Each class will have appropriate warm ups, then delve into the topic and leave you with simple take-home routines to practice. These workshops are open to all levels of practitioners.  If possible please bring your own yoga mat, blocks, strap, and blanket. 
 
Feb. 5 "Move into breath and meditation" 
We will take gentle movements to open up the body to facilitate a     
breathing practice perfect for beginners and then end the class with 
some meditation guidance.  

March 5 "Go with the Flow" 
We will explore a method of practicing yoga called
vinyasa and practice a simple vinyasa.  Great for all levels. 
 
April 2 "Balance"
There are many types of balancing postures in yoga which help us to 
balance ourselves in the world, both literally and symbolically. This  
class will be perfect for you whether you struggle to stay balanced or 
have an easy time of it. 
 
May 7 "Warrior"
We often think of yoga as a practice which brings peace and harmony 
but it is also a practice to be strong and to help us be compassionate 
warriors in the world. We will learn about the 3 different warrior poses 
and practice them. The focus will be on good alignment and is geared 
toward anyone who could refine their alignment in these poses. 
 
Time: 1-3 pm on Sundays listed above
Location: Union Street gym
Cost: $12 per class
 
 
PILATES
Come join us as we stretch and breathe our way to a healthier you!  This class will focus primarily on stretching and increasing your flexibility.  Please bring a mat to class
 
Days:  Mondays 5:30-6:30 pm
Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 am
Location: Union Street Rm 110

KEEP TALKING: AN INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL VOICE OVER
If you’ve ever wondered how to begin in voice over part time, full time, or for supplemental or retirement income, this workshop is a great, upbeat, and most importantly, realistic first step. Our easy-to-access remote learning system will take you behind the scenes at Voice Coaches main studios, where we regularly produce voice over content for clients including Netflix, Discovery, HGTV, Disney, Lifetime, Nickelodeon, and many more. From audio books, training material, animation, and commercials to socially relevant content, television, and much, much more: today’s voice over field has become a great way to leverage your individual voice qualities and communication skill in a whole new way.
 
This class also includes an opportunity to receive a brief one-on-one voice range and quality assessment with our instructor.

CARDIO DRUMMING 

Connect with your true rhythm in life by combining drumming, music, rhythm and movement! This complete cardio workout is sure to make you sweat!  First class is free to try!

 

Dates: Mondays & Thursdays (Year Round)

Time: 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Place: Greyhound Central Elementary - Gym

Cost: (Drop-in) $2.00 to rent a kit or $20 to purchase kit (class is free if you bring your own equipment)

 

 

SANCHIN-RYU'S KARATE FOR KIDS - (Grades K-8) 

This program combines two crucial courses into one - Sanchin-Ryu Karate & Self-Defense and Project Secure Child (child safety). This class is taught by Certified Sanchin-Ryu Instructor, Sensei Philip Benedict, 4th Degree Black Belt.

 

Dates: Wednesdays (Winter Session February 1st - March 22nd)

Time:  6:00 pm to 6:45 PM

Place:  Union Street Center (Room 108)

Cost:  $40/student (8 week session)

 

SANCHIN-RYU'S KARATE FOR FAMILIES 

Set in a fun, non-competitive and informative atmosphere, this program is designed to empower today's adults with knowledge that can save your life! Students will learn a broad range of techniques including individual strikes, advanced combinations and more. This class is taught by Certified Sanchin-Ryu Instructor, Sensei Philip Benedict, 4th Degree Black Belt.

 

Dates:  Wednesdays (Winter Session February 1st - March 22nd)

Time:  7:00 - 7:45 PM

Place:  Union Street Center (Room 108)

Cost:  $80/family (8 week session)

 

SANCHIN-RYU'S KARATE FOR ADULTS

RECREATIONAL UKULOGY

Do you want to learn to play the ukulele? Join us for a 6-Hour (three, 2-hour classes)Recreational Ukulogy Course! This is not a music theory class - NO experience needed!


You will learn to: identify parts of a ukulele, tuning a (GCEA) ukulele, identify usage of left & right hand, read chord shapes and applying movement to the fret board, use chromatic scale to find major (I, IV & V) chords of a key, transpose to different keys using a chart, play songs using 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 chords. You'll also get a song book with all songs you learn in class.


Open to ages 10-adult. There are 6 loaner ukeleles to use (first come first serve, email [email protected] if you plan to use one).

 

Dates: February 20th, 21st and 23rd

Time:  7:00-9:00 pm
