Community Education Programs

Our Community Education Classes are typically run out of Union Street Center.  Any other class sites will be indicated in the course descriptions listed below.  We would love to hear your ideas about classes that you would like to take or teach.  Give us a call at 517-663-8169!

We are currently accepting class proposals for our Community Education Program!  This is a great opportunity to share your skills with others.  Print and mail a copy of the Course Proposal Form to the attention of Melisa Kennedy at 501 Union Street or e-mail a completed form to mkennedy@erpsk12.org.

BEGINNING FENCING -  (AGES 9th Grade - Adult)

This is an on-going class to teach the basics of fencing.  Footwork and blade work are introduced.  Students will progress in class at their own speed and ability level, as well as have opportunities to train with other fencers.  There is club equipment available for use in class.  Classes are scheduled on a month to month basis.  All returning students who register a "First Time" student will be eligible for a FREE month of lessons!

Dates:  Fridays- Starting September 2nd

Time:  7:00pm to 9:00pm

Cost: Monthly - $100/first time students (includes one time equipment fee),  $50 for returning students



Learn brush technique, color mixtures, wet on wet, blending, setting up canvases and much more!  Start out with a 12x16 canvas and complete an oil painting in just 90 minutes. Class is taught by Dave Baker, a Bob Ross Certified Instructor. ALL supplies are provided.  The painting changes every month!

Dates:  Tuesday 7/19/, 8/16, 9/20, 10/18, 11/15

Time:  10:00 am OR 5:30 pm

CHAMPIONS of the REALM (Grades 6 to 8)

Role-playing games! Explore ancient ruins, haunted forests, and forgotten caverns in a world of magic, danger, and hidden treasure. Learn the GURPS game system rules, and conquer the realm. Materials such as dice, pencils, figurines and character sheets will be provided.

Dates: Fridays Sept.16th, 23rd, 30th and Oct. 7th, 21st, 28th

Time:  3:00- 6:00 pm

Place:  Middle School (Rm 108)

DODGEBALL (Age 6 - Adult)

Get your duck, dodge and dive ready for this energetic sport  This is a co-ed offering for team or individual sign ups with groups organized by age.  We use a soft foam Rhino dodgeball for younger age groups with an option of the original dodgeball for older age groups.  No experience necessary.  Dodgeball will be played for one hour mid to late afternoon on each Saturday all at Union Street Center.

A fun but challenging boot camp experience based on weight lifting.  All levels of fitness or experience are welcome! Classes are scheduled on an 8 week rotation

Dates: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (New Session begins May 2)

Time:  6:00pm to 7:00pm

Place:  ERHS Weight Room

Cost:  $50/ 8 week session



Summer is a great time to join Miss Sarah on a Zumba cruise! Join us as we explore the world from super Trinidad soca to hoppin’ Honduras punta, and even use our imaginations in India! Each week we will not only learn a dance, but we will play a game from the country of the day. At the end of the session everybody will get a passport with stamps for every country we visit. So come and be a part of the Zumba fun!  We also have a family rate so parents and siblings can be involved in the fun!

Cost: $20 per child for 6 week session or $30 for 6 week session for a family of 4.



Baseball and softball clinics developed to help kids learn the fundamentals of each sport. Players will practice together in different groups with coaches to work on all the skills needed for these sports.  No experience necessary.  Clinics will be scheduled for one hour for late-morning on each Sunday all at Greyhound Intermediate gym (GIS).  Parents will receive an email once schedules are set.  All equipment is provided, except a mitt.  Helmets are shared.

This class is intended for a fun and stress free learning environment for anyone who wants to learn to play the Ukulele.  The goals of this class are to engage people of all ages and increase cognitive developement in the young and help retain cognitive function as we age. You will learn to correctly identify the parts of a ukulele, correctly tune your ukulele and identify chords and chord groups. As the class progresses, your ability to play and your knowledge of the ukulele will increase as you learn to play songs and have "jam sessions" in a friendly environment.

Dates: 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month

Time: 7:00- 9:00 pm

Location: Union Street Center

Cost: $1 drop-in fee (Ukulele's only.  No other string instruments please! You must have your own ukulele)  Please bring writing and note supplies.


Introduction to Guitar (ages 12 and up)

This class offers a relaxed playing atmosphere with a musician who has been playing the guitar for over 20 years!  In this class you will learn to play single notes and beginning chords.  Guitar required.

Cost: $20 per lesson



Learn the basics of roller derby skating skills.  This is a class for women over the age of 18 who, at minimum, can forward skate without the assistance of walls or hand rails.  This is a drop in style, progressive skills class where we will go through foot work stopping, stepping, forward and backward skating.  The intent of the class is to find individuals who like skating, who want to build strength and endurance and just have fun!  For those on a current team, retired, or for those who have heard about the rigorous demands of roller derby teams, this is not the intent of this class.  This is intended to first develop people with basic skills and with enough interest, continue into another session with endurance drills and possible inter-team scrimmaging.

Connect with your true rhythm in life combining  drumming, music, rhythm and movement! This complete cardio workout is sure to make you sweat!  After each workout you will have the option to purchase a Herbal Life protein shake for $5.

Cost: (Drop-in) $2.00 to rent a kit or $25 to purchase kit

This program combines two crucial courses into one - Sanchin-Ryu Karate & Self-Defense and Project Secure Child (child safety). This class is taught by Certified Sanchin-Ryu Instructors, Master Dave Korman and Sensei Scott Jansen.

Set in a fun, non-competitive and informative atmosphere, this program is designed to empower today's adults with knowledge that can save your life! Students will learn a broad range of techniques including individual strikes, advanced combinations and more. ZUMBA and strength training combo (AGES 13 & UP)

The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to created a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away! The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. This class is for all ages and fitness levels. An optional 20 minute strength training class follows the Zumba class. You will need to supply your own free weight. Instructor Denise Perkins.

Dates: Monday and Thursday

Time: 5:30pm to 6:30 pm (Zumba) 6:30pm - 6:50pm (Strength Training)

Have you ever been told that you have a great voice?  This exciting class will explore the numerous aspects of voice over work for television, film, radio, audio books and documentaries.  We will cover all the basics, including how to prepare the all important demo, how to be successful and earn great income in this exciting field.  This class is informative, lots of fun and a great first step for anyone interested in voice acting proffessionally.  Space is limited, and registration closes one week prior to class, so register early!

Come be a part of a fun, exciting and enjoyable play!  We will be having a casting call on Monday, June 27th from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  You will go through some improvisation activities as well as read from some scenes to evaluate where you are.  After determining the number of participants, we will select a play to present to the community on August 19th and 20th.  Rehearsals will begin on on Wednesday, June 29th from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Office hours vary based on the building-wide schedule.  Please leave a voice mail message or send an e-mail and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

Class cancellation process:

Most classes require a minimum number of participants.  If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, we will contact registrants within 24 hours of the first class and a full refund will be issued.

Refund Procedures:

To cancel your registration, please email mkennedy@erpsk12.org.  Class cancellations must be requested 48 hours prior to the first class for a full refund.  A 50% refund is offered for cancellation prior to the second class.  No refund will be given after the second class or after a one-day seminar.  Refunds are typically processed within 30 days.
