Community Education Programs

Our Community Education Classes are typically run out of Union Street Center.  Any other class sites will be indicated in the course descriptions listed below.  We would love to hear your ideas about classes that you would like to take or teach.  Give us a call at 517-663-8169!

We are currently accepting class proposals for our Community Education Program!  This is a great opportunity to share your skills with others.  Print and mail a copy of the Course Proposal Form to the attention of Melisa Kennedy at 501 Union Street or e-mail a completed form to mkennedy@erpsk12.org.

BEGINNING FENCING -  (AGES 9th Grade - Adult)

This is an on-going class to teach the basics of fencing.  Footwork and blade work are introduced.  Students will progress in class at their own speed and ability level, as well as have opportunities to train with other fencers.  There is club equipment available for use in class.  Classes are scheduled on a month to month basis.  All returning students who register a "First Time" student will be eligible for a FREE month of lessons!

Dates:  Fridays - January - February

Time:  7:00pm to 9:00pm

Place:  Union Street Center

Cost: Monthly - $100/first time students (includes one time equipment fee),  $50 for returning students



Learn brush technique, color mixtures, wet on wet, blending, setting up canvases and much more!  Start out with a 12x16 canvas and complete an oil painting in just 90 minutes. Class is taught by Dave Baker, a Bob Ross Certified Instructor. ALL supplies are provided.  The painting changes every month!

Dates:  Tuesday 1/19, 2/16, 3/15

Time:  10:00 am OR 5:30 pm

CHAMPIONS of the REALM (Grades 6 to 8)

Role-playing games! Explore ancient ruins, haunted forests, and forgotten caverns in a world of magic, danger, and hidden treasure. Learn the GURPS game system rules, and conquer the realm. Materials such as dice, pencils, figurines and character sheets will be provided.

Dates:  Fridays - Jan. 15 & 29, Feb. 5,19 & 26, March 4

Time:  3:00pm to 6:00pm

DODGEBALL (Age 6 - Adult)

Get your duck, dodge and dive ready for this energetic sport  This is a co-ed offering for team or individual sign ups with groups organized by age.  We use a soft foam Rhino dodgeball for younger age groups with an option of the original dodgeball for older age groups.  No experience necessary.  Dodgeball will be played for one hour mid to late afternoon on each Saturday all at Union Street Center.

A fun but challenging boot camp experience based on weight lifting.  All levels of fitness or experience are welcome! Classes are scheduled on an 8 week rotation

Dates: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (11/3 - 12/22; 1/5 - 2/23)

Time:  6:00pm to 7:00pm

Place:  ERHS Weight Room

Cost:  $100/ 8 week session



This is a fun filled 2 hour class every week for four weeks.  During each weekly session kids will learn through hands on experience in a fun filled environment!  With every session children create a new project and receive a new experience each week that they take home with them to proudly display.  This is not your average kids' workshop.  Students will be introduced to different aerts and craft techniques with quality materials and lots of creativity.

Dates: Thursdays February 4, 11, 18, 25

Time: 6:00-8:00 pm

Cost: $65 includes all supplies!

Indoor Coach Pitch Boys Baseball or Girls Softball Clinics - Ages 7-9



Baseball and softball clinics developed to help kids learn the fundamentals of each sport. Players will practice together in different groups with coaches to work on all the skills needed for these sports.  No experience necessary.  Clinics will be scheduled for one hour for late-morning on each Sunday all at Greyhound Intermediate gym (GIS).  Parents will receive an email once schedules are set.  All equipment is provided, except a mitt.  Helmets are shared. 

Dates: January 10, 17, 24, 31 and February 7, 14, 28

Time: 11:30am – 12:30pm

This class is intended for a fun and stress free learning environment for anyone who wants to learn to play the Ukulele.  The goals of this class are to engage people of all ages and increase cognitive developement in the young and help retain cognitive function as we age. You will learn to correctly identify the parts of a ukulele, correctly tune your ukulele and identify chords and chord groups. As the class progresses, your ability to play and your knowledge of the ukulele will increase as you learn to play songs and have "jam sessions" in a friendly environment.

Dates: 1st and 3rd Mondays starting January 4th

Time: 7:00- 9:00 pm

Cost: $1 drop-in fee (Ukulele's only.  No other string instruments please! You must have your own ukulele)  Please bring writing and note supplies.


INDOOR TEE BALL - (Ages 3-4 & 5-6)

Co-ed clinic developed to help kids learn the joy and “fun”damentals of tee ball.  Children will practice together in small groups with coaches and during scrimmages to brush up on already learned skills or to learn from scratch.  No experience necessary.  Clinics will be scheduled for one hour for Sunday mid-morning all at Greyhound Intermediate Gym (GIS).  Parents will be contacted by email once schedules are set.  All equipment is provided, except a mitt.  Helmets are shared.

East Lansing Roller Derby Mitten Mavens are pleased to announce our 2016 Basic Skills Roller Derby Boot Camp- Winter Session.  No prior experience is necessary in order to participate.  That includes never having skated before.  No really, we're serious.  You wouldn't believe the number of people who come in with ZERO experience and move on to become some of our best skaters. During our boot camp we teach you proper skating form and stance, agility, game play, strategy and everything in between that will allow you to become a successful and safe skater.  Basic Skills Boot Camp is run twice a week for 6 consecutive weeks.  The boot camp is run by members of our coaching staff, accompanied by help from the current Mitten Mavens veteran skaters.  Our system is built to develope skaters to their full potential, regardless of prior skill experience and ability, never limiting or discriminating against any member. Ever.  Our organization values a collective learning approach to provide unique perspectives from a unified mission of a core leadership group.  We feel this diverse learning experience provides participants the best possible opportunity to flourish in a safe and positive environment.

Dates:  Thursdays January 28th - March 3rd and Sundays January 31st - March 6th

Connect with your true rhythm in life combining  drumming, music, rhythm and movement! This complete cardio workout is sure to make you sweat!  After each workout you will have the option to purchase a Herbal Life protein shake for $5.

This is a family themed workshop held once a month that covers the basic principles of nutrition including reading food labels at grocery stores, tips for how to shop, organic vs. non-organic foods, essential nutrition components such as fats, proteins and carbohydrates and healthy substitutions. Participants will also learn how to navigate and utilize Myplate.gov, an online tool to help track your nutrition and fitness goals.  Grocery store tours are also available to teach smart shopping.

ZUMBA and strength training combo (AGES 13 & UP)

The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to created a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away! The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. This class is for all ages and fitness levels. An optional 20 minute strength training class follows the Zumba class. You will need to supply your own free weight. Instructor Denise Perkins.

A single evening introduction to Voice Acting class that’s presented by Voice Coaches.  This class is especially appealing to educators and instructors who use their voices professionally already.  It’s a fun and enlightening evening that offers up a lot of great information about the field of Voice Acting.

Office hours vary based on the building-wide schedule.  Please leave a voice mail message or send an e-mail and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

Class cancellation process:

Most classes require a minimum number of participants.  If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, we will contact registrants within 24 hours of the first class and a full refund will be issued.

Refund Procedures:

To cancel your registration, please email mkennedy@erpsk12.org.  Class cancellations must be requested 48 hours prior to the first class for a full refund.  A 50% refund is offered for cancellation prior to the second class.  No refund will be given after the second class or after a one-day seminar.  Refunds are typically processed within 30 days.
