Community Education Programs

Our Community Education Classes are typically run out of Union Street Center.  Any other class sites will be indicated in the course descriptions listed below.  We would love to hear your ideas about classes that you would like to take or teach.  Give us a call at 517-663-8169!

american red cross community cpr/aed certificiation:

This is one night class where you can either renew your current CPR/AED certification or renew it. Bring a friend and receive $10 off your certification!!

Dates: Tuesdays nights June - August

Time: 6p - 10p

Cost: Initial CPR certification - $65; Recertification - $45 


Local attorney at Law, Dr. Donald Baranski, will be holding different classes/seminars each month that will cover a wide range of subjects. Each session will focus specifically on one topic where questions can be easily asked and answered. Some of the subjects will include: Small Claims court, Divorce and custody, Last Will and Testament, Living Trust, Power of attorney, Bankruptcy, Foreclosure, Starting a business, Real Estate, Probate, Judgments, and Criminal Law just to name a few. Check back often to see which topics will be covered!

Beginning painting (Age 13+)

Learn brush technique, color mixtures, wet on wet, blending, setting up canvases and much more!  Start out with a 12x16 canvas and complete an oil painting in just 90 minutes. Class is taught by Dave Baker, a Bob Ross Certified Instructor. ALL supplies are provided.  The painting changes every month!

Dates:  Tuesdays; 5/19, 6/16, 7/21, 8/18

champions of the realm (Grades 6 to 8)

In the Temple of Karstmoor, our heroes have found ancient writings that speak of lost treasure. They know of three, different, forgotten locations spread across the known lands: They have three choices. Join us, and unravel the mysteries.

Dates:  Thursdays, June 18th & 25th, July 2nd through 23rd

Time:  6:00pm to 9:00pm

Place:  Union Street - Room #107

Cost:  $45 

er ladies boot camp 

A fun but challenging boot camp experience based on weight lifting.  All levels of fitness or experience are welcome! Classes are scheduled on an 8 week rotation

Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4/28 - 6/18

Time:  6:00pm to 7:00pm

Place:  ERHS Weight Room

Cost:  $100/ 8 week session

Fencing -  (ages 12&Up)

This is an on-going class to teach the basics of fencing.  Footwork and blade work are introduced.  Students will progress in class at their own speed and ability level, as well as have opportunities to train with other fencers.  There is club equipment available for use in class.  Classes are scheduled on a month to month basis.  All returning students who register a "First Time" student will be eligible for a FREE month of lessons!

Dates:  Fridays - June and July

Time:  7:00pm to 9:00pm

Cost: Monthly - $100/first time students (includes one time equipment fee),  $50 for returning students

Getting Paid to talk

A single-evening introduction to Voice Acting class that's presented by Voice Coaches. This class is especially appealing to educators and instructors who use their voices professionally already. It's a fun and enlightening evening that offers up a lot of great information about the field of Voice Acting.

Dates: 6/8, 8/11, 11/30

Time: 6:30 - 9:00

Mid Michigan Family Theatre (AGE 5 - ADULT) - Goldilocks


In this comic spin on the classic fairy tale, Goldilocks is once again confronted by the Three Bears...and Joe, the Bears' species exchange student. From Goldilocks' house to the Bears' home and back again, a slew of fairy tale characters cross Goldilocks' path to give advice and tell their tales. This fresh adaptation teaches young audiences the meaning of responsibility through its clever, upbeat dialogue and audience participation.

Rehersals will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 at Union Street Center. Production will take place on August 7 & 8 at the Dorthy Merrit Auditorium, doors open at 7:00pm.  

Who: Interested actors and tech personnel ages 5 - adult. 

Dates: Auditions - June 16 and June 18  

Time:  Check in for auditions - 6:30pm

Cost: Participation Fee $25 for all students. Adults will not be assessed a production fee but are asked to help mentor younger actors and / or help with production duties such as costuming, set building, etc.

Sanchin-Ryu's Karate for Kids (Grades K-8)

This program combines two crucial courses into one - Sanchin-Ryu Karate & Self-Defense and Project Secure Child (child safety). This class is taught by Certified Sanchin-Ryu Instructors, Master Dave Korman and Sensei Scott Jansen.

Dates:  Summer  Thursdays -  6/11 to 8/27

Time:  6:00pm to 7:00pm

Cost:  $45/session

sanchin-Ryu's Karate for Adults

Set in a fun, non-competitive and informative atmosphere, this program is designed to empower today's adults with knowledge that can save your life! Students will learn a broad range of techniques including individual strikes, advanced combinations and more. This class is taught by Certified Sanchin-Ryu Instructors, Master Dave Korman and Sensei Scott Jansen.

writing for life

Have you ever wanted to write, but wasn't sure how to begin? Do you feel as if you have a story within you to tell? Are you interested in learning how personal writing, whether it is writing poetry, journaling or some other type of writing, can enhance your life? If so, this is the class for you! Angela Gambrel, an award-winning journalist and lifetime writer, will guide you in this workshop-style class and help you learn the joys of writing! Ms. Gambrel received her BA in English writing from Eastern Michigan University and her MA in English Composition and Communication from Central Michigan University. There are no wrongs in writing - only the excitement of putting words together with meaning! Please bring your favorite writing tool (pen and paper, ipad, laptop...)

ZUMBA and strength training combo (AGES 13 & UP)

The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to created a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away! The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. This class is for all ages and fitness levels. An optional 20 minute strength training class follows the Zumba class. You will need to supply your own free weight. Instructor Denise Perkins.

Time: 5:30pm to 6:30pm (Zumba) 6:30pm - 6:50pm (Strength Training)

Cost: $5 drop-in fee (Zumba) $2 additional (Strength Training)

Zumba for kids (Ages 7-12)

Join the fun and ride the Zumba bus with us! With your guide Miss Sarah leading you in joyful dance, we will travel to many countries. From Cumbia Columbia to Puerto Rican reggaeton and beyond, you are sure to get moving and have a great time! Fill your passport with stamps from all the places we've been and play games from all the different counties we visit. A new world awaits you - Come join the fun. Parents are welcome to register with child(ren)

Office hours vary based on the building-wide schedule.  Please leave a voice mail message or send an e-mail and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

Class cancellation process:

Most classes require a minimum number of participants.  If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, we will contact registrants within 24 hours of the first class and a full refund will be issued.

Refund Procedures:

To cancel your registration, please mail  Class cancellations must be requested 48 hours prior to the first class for a full refund.  A 50% refund is offered for cancellation prior to the second class.  No refund will be given after the second class or after a one-day seminar.  Refunds are typically processed within 30 days.
